Prose Hair Care System Review

Prose Hair Care Review

Five Word Review: Get Ready for Celeb Hair

Unsponsored RAVE Review. UPDATE: 3+ years later and I’m still sold out. I’ll never use any other hair products. LOVE the shampoo, conditioner, pre shampoo masks (‘on lengths’ is conditioning and ‘on roots’ is clarifying charcoal). I don’t like the hair oil personally and they refunded me! (Their customer service is awe inspiring).

They are a B Corp, use sustainably sourced ingredients, bottled in Brooklyn and they really mean 100% satisfaction guarantee with free shipping.

I started using after I had my first baby, Cohen, and my hair was SO SO greasy thanks to Postpartum hormones. I would wash my hair everyday, use dry shampoo and it would STILL look greasy. Fast forward to today; my third baby is over a year and I NEVER had postpartum greasy hair. I currently wash my hair about twice a week and the products last me FOREVER (realistically 3-4 months).

When I had grease-ball hair, I used the pre shampoo scalp clarifying charcoal mask followed by the custom shampoo TWICE. I notice that the lather is MUCH better after the charcoal mask and when doing the double shampoo. I also got a natural bristle brush to help redistribute hair oil.

My main caveat is that they do NOT warn you before they process your refill subscription, so I recommend setting a calendar reminder on your phone so that you can go in to “Review and Refine” (that’s where you can pick another scent, too) or snooze.

When I saw my friend, Alex’s, hair looking like a Pantene Pro-V ad, she told me about a new haircare system she discovered: Prose. She was the first (but not the last) person to literally utter the words “It has completely changed my hair.” I had been using Living Proof on and off for a few years and had really been struggling with postpartum greasy hair that was falling out and I hadn’t been to the salon in… a very long time (so Prose really had a challenge to deal with). Personalization seems to be all the rage (I just saw some customizable beauty products at Target), but trust me: Prose takes it to a new level.

Prose gives the same level of attention I expect Scarlet Johanson receives when she is purchasing something as mundane as shampoo, but they make it feel like PURE LUXURY and all of their personalization really pays off. The proof is in the… hair luster (?).

The introductory ‘Hair Quiz’ is EXTENSIVE and didn’t realize all of the different environmental factors that could be effecting my hair, but it makes sense. They even look at your zip code so they can evaluate your water!

I asked for the Prose for my birthday and it did not disappoint. I would have been tempted not to purchase the pre-shampoo mask because sometimes I can be a bit stingy, but I’m so glad my MIL sprung for the full set for me because I won’t ever NOT use it again. The Shampoo and Conditioner are $29 and Pre-Shampoo Masks are $40. All together was $99. I have found that one set lasts about 3 months for me and the mask is 6-9 months since I don’t use very often.

It’s also one of my favorite gifts to give, because it gets emailed directly to someone’s inbasket. It’s a great way to spoil someone you love!

This was such a fun birthday gift in my inbox!!

They say to use the system for 3-4 washes before evaluating if it’s working for you. If you do and you aren’t loving the results, you can write them in and have them reformulate for you. One of the scents I chose on my second refill made my scalp itchy, and they immediately credited me to reorder. Overall, I have been wildly impressed with their customer service and product.

I normally wouldn’t spring for a hair mask (I’m a basics gal), but so glad I did!

Another reason to support Prose? They are a Certified B Corp, which is important to me to support! “Certified B Corporations are a new kind of business that balances purpose and profit. They are required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. This is a community of leaders, driving a global movement of people using business as a force for good.” (BCorporation.net). Ben and Jerrys is also a B Corp so you can feel REALLY good about eating their ice cream;) They also use diversity in their advertising+

I am now a ‘Prose Girl’ and plan to keep reordering! They have a lot of helpful articles on their blog and I have also learned to use natural bristles to help distribute hair oil.

I ordered the Oasis scent and LOVE IT.

I have recently expanded my collection to include the curl cream, leave in conditioner and hair oil. If you wanted to expand, I’d recommend leave in conditioner first. Below is the instructions from The Pros at Prose:

”Layering your different styling products is truly something that is best discovered when playing around with them as everyone's preferences are unique. :)

That said, if you are concerned about avoiding too much product that can weigh down hair, I would rely more on your custom leave-in conditioner as it's the lightest in consistency, and be very lighthanded when using your custom hair oil.

A little goes a long way with the hair oil and you'll probably enjoy using it most as a finishing smoother on days your hair feels particularly dry or you are experiencing a lot of frizz that the leave-in conditioner cannot tame on its own.

The curl cream can also be layered on top of the leave-in conditioner, but since you noted you have fine hair that tends to be oily, I recommend using this product on its own for best definition of your waves and to avoid weighing them down.”

I love you, I love you, I love you. You are beautiful.
