Pandetiquette: Etiquette for the Pandemic

Relating to others in society can sometimes be challenging, but it has been even more so since the pandemic. The rules of engagement seem to constantly be changing, and it can be difficult to balance safety with consideration. My most favorite etiquette guru, Lizzie Post (great-great-granddaughter of THE Emily Post), joined me to talk about all of the etiquette questions that have come up during the pandemic. She is the author of Emily Post’s Etiquette, Higher Etiquette, Wedding Etiquette (and more!) and is the co-host of my favorite weekly podcast, Awesome Etiquette.

Lizzie took quite a few for the team, popped into the hot seat and provided sample scripts for all of your tricky situations, including:

  • How do you tell someone you have exposed them to C O V I D

  • How do you ask someone how safe they have been before seeing them or having them meet your baby?

  • How do you tell someone not to touch your baby?

  • Can you ask if someone is vaccinated prior to seeing them?

  • What do you say if someone asks you to meet up, but you can tell from social media they have not been following CDC guidelines?

  • How to nicely tell someone to “Back Off” if they get too close while you are out

  • How to respond if someone tells you to “Back off,” but you are farther than 6 feet.

  • The big doozy: Your friend tells you that she has exposed you to C O V I D, but not to share with anyone else. You know that she has exposed others, but is not telling them. Should you share with the others?

You aren’t even going to believe how lucky you are, but the week prior, Lizzie had actually joined me to chat about all of our gifting questions!! She tackled the full spectrum of gifting, including:

  • Is gifting reciprocal/ is it rude if you don’t have a gift for someone who gives you a gift?

  • Is it rude to regift?

  • Do you have to keep a gift you don’t love?

  • Can you tell someone what you want them to buy for you?

  • Do you really have a year to buy a wedding gift?

  • Are you obligated to send a gift for any invitations you receive?

  • Are you obligated to pay if you invite a friend out for drinks or dinner?
