Sippy Cups are CANCELLED

I’d love to connect with you on Instagram, where I share home, health and lifestyle tips!

Sippy cups are CANCELLED, as they promote tongue thrust, which can cause issues with dentition and articulation.

While doing a little recon for an upcoming video I am making, I contacted Jeannie Kane, Pediatric Speech Language Pathologist and owner (#BOSSLADY) of Oak Hill Speech Therapy in Virginia. I wanted to know if a baby was choking if it was better for them to clear their food with a straw or sippy cup.

My world was about to be rocked…. SIPPY CUPS ARE CANCELLED!!! The fancier way of saying that is that “we generally recommend going directly from bottle or breast to an open-cup or straw. Avoid Sippy cups as they promote tongue thrust, which can cause dentition and articulation issues” (Jeannie Kane).

Cohen loves his Pengoo, which is an option for straw-cups.

As water is one of the easiest ways to help your baby clear foods they are choking on (with productive coughing), it’s important to offer them some water as they are trying new foods and eating. Here are two of our favorite cups that are recommended:

Munchkin Miracle 360 Trainer Cup: These are like magic! They don’t leak and don’t allow any liquid to come out unless someone is sucking on the cup’s edge. You can purchase the “tasse” toddler cups when they graduate from the trainers, as well as lids to be extra- safe while in bags or travelling. $6 each.

Click on the image for a link to the Munchkin 360 Miracle cup- these are considered an “open cup” and do not cause issues with dentition or articulation. Also, they are pediatric dentist recommended!

Joovy Pengoo: Cohen loves his Pengoo, which is an option for straw-cups. It’s easy to grab, but is more expensive than other models and has 4-5 pieces (more cumbersome to wash). They are VERY spill proof, and not to mention, ADORABLE. $14.99 each.

Do you have any other favorite spill-proof cup options for tots? I’m all ears!

XOXO, Traci
