Best way to get cheap tickets: Skyscanner.com (Thank you Will Clark!)
Best way to find a nice hotel for a deep discount: hoteltonight.com (Thanks Will Clark!)
Only fly with carry-ons when possible, but don’t forget the liquid rules! “You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item” (tsa). EXCEPTIONS: medications and infant and child nourishment!
Every wonder how some people get to fly through the separate security line? It’s called TSA Precheck. “With a 5 year, $85 membership, you can speed through security and don’t need to remove your: shoes, laptops, liquids, belts and light jackets.” You do need to make an appointment and submit to a background check, but for less than $20/year, it would be TOTALLY worth it!
Forever New Single-Dose Fabric wash is a must-pack! To keep your bathing suit in good condition, you need to wash it after each use or the chlorine and salt eat away at the elastic. You can also use these to wash your unmentionables (undies and bras) in the sink if you are gone for more than a few days and want to freshen up.
Earplanes: These tiny silicone special ear plugs help to relieve pressure during takeoff and landing, as well as reduce loud noises. $3.49 from Target (Tip Courtesy of Emily H.).
Tips for Traveling with Kids
For Kids: “Bring a balloon for your child to blow up during takeoff and landing’ says Alyssa Hackett, a doctor who specializes in otolaryngology at Mt Sinai. The blowing helps equalize the pressure in the ears. Have an infant or toddler? Giver her a bottle or pacifier to suck on. When the plane descends, wake a sleeping child so their ears can adjust. ‘A fussy, sleepy child is better than one screaming in pain from the sudden change in pressure,’ says Dr. Hackett” (from Real Simple, 2018).
Solly Baby Wrap:
This wrap makes it onto quite a few of my “must have” lists, but it’s great for traveling. You can be mostly hands free while walking through the airport, but you can loosen it to have your baby swaddled to your chest in-flight to keep them close and cozy but also keep your hands mostly free. (They do make you remove the baby during take off and landing though). This tip came from Heather G!
Travelling with a toddler? I filled a few small brown bags with different little treats and toys for my kids to open on a long road trip once.
It is also a bit sticky/messy, but the large lollipops are a great way to keep them entertained for a long period of time!
