Eco-Friendly and Adorable kids' shop: Ouistitine

Ouistitine blows my socks off. Not only do they have the CUTEST hand puppets you have ever seen, they are far and away the more environmentally friendly business I’ve ever come across. “Ouistitine is a small Montreal-based company that makes hand puppets, dolls, toys, accessories and more from recycled natural fibers (pure wool, suede, leather and recovered furs, linen, cotton). She is totally eco responsible, natural, ethical and local” (www.Ouistitine.com). I could not be more excited to support this woman-owned business and hope to add more of these fun and whimsical pieces to our collection in the future!

We named our washcloth kitty after the woman behind Ouistitine: Camille! She has made bath time more fun for our little guy who HATES to be wiped!

I purchased (who we have come to know as) Pierre, the Puppy Puppet and Camille, the washcloth kitty. Pierre’s tag highlights everything Ouistitine is doing well: Natural, Zero Waste, Compostable, Carbon Neutral, ethical, slow made, and mindful. I purchased the hand puppets because they were so darling, but will continue to support the business because of their incredible ethics.

I love open-ended toys that encourage imaginative play. Pierre’s tag also had illustrated examples of how the puppet can be used: to stimulate baby’s awakening, being a comforting friend, soothe and appease fears at bedtime, facilitate everyday tasks like brushing teeth, bath, and help manage emotions (I am immediately brought to the scene in What About Bob!).

Dr Leo Marvin loves to use hand puppets to help his kids explore their emotions in What About Bob, although Anna wasn’t nearly as excited about her puppet as your little one will be with their Ouistitine animal friend!

I let out a gasp of joy when I saw the packaging our puppets arrived in: Ouistitine truly lives out their mission in every part of their business. Our order arrived in a BetterPackaging.co bag, which is 100% compostable and they encourage you to reuse it until it’s worn out, then it can be tossed in the compost with food waste!!! I e-mailed a few of my favorite shops to share about these bags because it feels wasteful to receive orders with lots of plastic bags that don’t have much reuse, so hopefully more businesses can start using these!

I’m definitely going to get some of these comPOST packs to ship out items in! www.betterpackaging.co

They have a variety of products on their site, from puppets to stuffed animals, to a variety of other goods. Reminder: the prices are in Canadian dollars, so they are a bit less if you are purchasing from the US. Shipping is $10 CAD for Canada and the US.
