Reuseable Wax Wrap Dupe... or Don't?

Usually I swear by all of the things that Trader Joe thinks I might enjoy, but his version of the waxed cotton food wraps are… not really useable.

This Trader Joe’s Waxed Cotton Food Wrap dupe is a don’t. Spend the extra $ for a much easier to use and quality product (Bee’s Wrap).

I came across the idea of a reuse-able wax food wrap a few months ago and was very tempted by the idea of saving ziplock bags and food wrap waste by re-using a wax wrap (try saying that 5 times fast). It’s basically cloth that is dipped in wax that you can use anytime you would have otherwise used saran wrap or a ziplock bag (but no meat). When it came time to check out for $20, I got shy and decided to skip it. A few months went by and after 4 trips out for different kinds of Ziplock bags, I came across wax wrap at Trader Joe’s for a fraction of the price ($7.98 I believe). I was super excited and loaded them into my cart. I decided to do a head to head comparison and ordered the fancy wraps on Amazon as well ( the $20 price tag still stung… no pun intended!).

Spend the few extra $ for the luxury food wax wraps! This is one time I am not siding with Trader Joe’s (please don’t tell him I said that!)

This is one of the first situations where I will be the first to say: pay more!! This Dupe is definitely a Don’t. The Bee’s Wrap is soft, thin, and molds to food really easily (the first one I used was for half of an avocado). The Trader Joe’s version was SO thick it squished the avocado and left an awful waxy residue on my hands. There really is no comparison. Trader Joe’s has a great return policy so I’m going to try to bring these guys back tomorrow.

The Trader Joe’s Waxed Cotton Food Wraps are stiff and very hard to use. They leave a sticky-waxy substance on your hands. The Bee’s Wraps are malleable, thin, and are much more user-friendly.

Looking to reduce your Green Footprint? Give the Bee’s Wraps a try! I think they work better for direct-food-wrapping (cheese, fruit) than replacing ziplock bags but I’m still a newbie.
